Rolls-Royce is renowned for its bespoke cars, but once the company failed to impress it’s one of the customers.

According to Rolls, in 2013 an individual approached the company and asked them to build a one-of-a-kind motor car inspired by the luxury yachts of the 1920s and 30s.

Giles Taylor, the director of design at Rolls-Royce, likened the design process to haute couture. “This customer came to the House of Rolls-Royce with an idea, shared in the creative process where we advised him on his cloth, and then we tailored that cloth to him,” Taylor said.” You might say we cut the fabric for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by.”

And, the result of the royalty was put on display on May 27 at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este called the Rolls-Royce. The one-off the car that took almost four years to be made reportedly carries a price-tag of $13 Million. The Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a tribute of swept-tail Rolls-Royces of the 1920s.

At the front Sweptail resembles the Phantom. The coach built vehicle take inspiration from the 1925 Phantom I Round Door, 1934 Phantom II Streamline Saloon and 1934 Gurney Nutting Phantom II Two Door Light Saloon.

The Sweptail consists of an exotic wood interior, a panoramic glass skylight and a special compartment for the briefcase. The front grille of the Rolls-Royce Sweptail is made of aluminium and hand polished to give a mirror finish. The coupe has a gently sloping roofline.

All the buttons and switches of a motor car are shielded behind the Macassar Ebony wood. The Rolls-Royce Sweptail offer enough space for the luggage. The car has two hidden panniers in the boot to fit the laptop cases. It will slide forward when the passenger presses the button.
